Early voting legislation H3608 has been submitted in the state legislative branch. First it was submitted to allow 15 days of early voting the Judiciary Committee changed it to 3 days. I emailed by representatives urging them to restore 15 days of early voting back into the bill.

Will you call your State Representative and ask her/him to vote against 3 day
early voting in South Carolina and support the original 15 days?

I spoke with three different Canadians recently at different times and all three of them have no complaints about their health care. Their wait in line is no longer than what we are waiting now here with private health care. It is no waiting six months for surgery. All lies by some of our fellow Americans. Continue

Congress Challenge

I have just called Congressman Browns’ office @ 747-4175 and left a message that he should in the name of conservativism summit a bill to cut all government health care for federal elected officials meaning all of Congress and the US Senate. Let’s see if that will fly.

Dear Mr President: America's advice for running the country

Dear President Obama #116: …and out come the wolves
Posted: 08:45 AM ET

Reporter’s Note: From his home on Pennsylvania Avenue, President Barack Obama has asked Americans for advice on running the country. From my office, just a stone’s throw from the Capitol (if it were a really perfect stone, you had a really sort of super-human arm, and security police would not pound you to the ground) I am sending a letter to the White House every day.

South Carolina coal plants and mountaintop removal

South Carolina ranks among the top ten consumers of mountaintop removal coal nationally, with roughly 50 percent (or eight million tons) of our state’s coal coming from mountaintop removal coal.

The press event will focus on the specific connection between South Carolina coal plants and mountaintop removal sites in West Virginia and Kentucky, and will feature residents from the region who have been directly harmed by mountaintop removal coal mining in their communities.

Earth Day in the Community Garden

On Earth Day, we enjoyed the beautiful weather and celebrated Mother Earth by working in the Community Garden. Shea, our energetic leader, has provided space in her yard for the garden. A cold snap had threatened some of the plants, but Jennifer, Anj and Shea successfully revived them by digging them out of the ground and replanting them in starter pots.

The Community Garden is organic, using the lasagna method of layering soil, compost and wood chips. All materials are local. For Earth Day, we… Continue

Environment Committee Meeting

Hello everyone,

The Environment Committee held a short meeting on April 11 after the Grassroots meeting at Alchemy. We discussed some new ideas. Jennifer Johnson suggested a "green the greenway" initiative to clean up the greenway. She is going to look into contacting neighborhood groups to partcipate.

We also talked about getting information on all the green committees and groups in the area, becoming a central source of knowledge about them, and filming groups' meetings.

The committee also… Continue

Solar Power for Charleston, and Beyond...

Hiya!
I saw this blurb in the Utne Reader last week and checked the website today. It's pretty interesting, and in my opinion well worth signing up, please read on -

"Solar Power in Numbers: One Block Off the Grid makes solar energy a community effort by securing neighborhoods bulk discounts on equipment and installation. The all-volunteer program boasts some 700 member homes in 20 cities." Utne Reader Jan/Feb 09
